The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, built between 1886 and 1910 in a Romanesque style and in use until 1990, is best known as a main filming location for The Shawshank Redemption. It is also one of the best-known haunted prisons in the country, and TourismOhio lists it as a must-visit haunted place. Visitors tell of voices in the corridors, cold spots in cells and the isolation cells, and of the warden's wife, Helen Glattke, who died from a gunshot in 1950. The building is an Ohio Register landmark and is open for tours and public ghost walks.
Open to the public for self-guided and guided tours; two-hour public ghost walks and longer paranormal events run on select dates and need tickets ahead of time. Check the Reformatory's site for hours.
