The Licking County Historic Jail in downtown Newark is a Gothic-style brownstone jail built in 1889 with a sheriff's residence in front, and it is on TourismOhio's haunted list. At least 22 deaths in custody are recorded, and visitors report disembodied voices, slamming cell doors, shadowy figures and strange lights. It is now run by local volunteers as a museum and a seasonal haunted attraction.
