The library moved into the former Powell residence in 1930; the Madison Library Society itself dates back to 1818. A young man who lived in the house before the move, and who used a wheelchair, is said to still ride the building's elevator between floors — patting or brushing the shoulders of women who ride it, and nicknamed Charlie by those who liked him. Staff, including library directors, have reported footsteps upstairs when no one else is in the building and lights found on in rooms they'd turned off.
Public library in the historic Powell House. Open Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays.
