At Clifty Falls State Park, visitors report moaning coming from a tree beside the walkway leading down into the falls. Madison residents donated the 570 acres that became Clifty Falls State Park in 1920, Indiana's third state park, created at conservationist Richard Lieber's suggestion to preserve the waterfalls on Clifty Creek and to honor the area's World War I dead. The Civilian Conservation Corps built much of the park's rustic infrastructure — roads, trails, shelters, and gatehouses — between 1933 and 1938; it has since grown to over 1,500 acres.
State park open daily with a nature center and Clifty Inn. An entrance fee is charged during the main season. Trails near the falls are steep and rocky, so wear good shoes.
