The Alumni House at McKendree University, founded in 1828 as Illinois's oldest college, carries a somber history: an elderly woman died after falling down the stairs one evening, her husband died by suicide in the building shortly after, and a baby who lived there died of pneumonia. The back office, once the house's nursery, stays unusually cold even in summer. Staff working late report footsteps on the lower floors and describe a pair of disembodied red eyes that appear in the doorway of an old garden shed out back, seeming to follow visitors as they walk to their cars.
