The Dumas Brothel in Butte's Venus Alley district was built in 1890 and operated until 1982, making it one of the longest-running brothels in the United States. Its 43 rooms were divided by price across three floors. The building is now a museum that interprets the lives of the women who worked and lived here, and it is one of Butte's best-known haunted sites, featured in a number of paranormal and documentary productions. Local accounts name Eleanor Knott, a madam said to have died by her own hand in 1955, as the spirit most often sensed here.
Tours are offered by schedule, mostly from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and last about an hour and a quarter. Private ghost hunts can be booked. Check the museum for current dates.
