The Ruebel Hotel in Grafton, on the Great River Road, was first built in 1879, burned in 1912 and was rebuilt in 1913 with 32 rooms, a first-floor restaurant and a second-floor dance hall. Illinois tourism calls it Grafton's most famous haunted site. Guests have long reported the ghost of a little girl named Abigail, said to have struggled to breathe while staying with her parents in the 1920s, whose name the hotel's bar, Abigail's Tap Room, now carries. The Telegraph of Alton has reported on the hotel naming its bar after the spirit. The hotel is a working inn and restaurant, and the stories are guest and staff lore.
