Built in 1914 and operating until 1971, the Mineral Springs Hotel once housed the largest swimming pool in Illinois, filled with mineral water guests believed had healing properties. Its best-known ghost is the "Jasmine Lady" — said to have been a guest who began an affair with another visitor while her husband was away; when he returned and caught them together, she died falling, or being pushed, down a staircase, and the scent of jasmine is still reported drifting through the halls. A second reported spirit is Clarence Blair, a Granite City sheet metal worker who drowned in the hotel pool while taking swimming lessons. The building now operates as a paid tour site.
The 1914 hotel closed in 1971 and now houses an antique mall, shops, a museum and haunted-tour operators on its lower floors, with private apartments above. The shops and tours keep their own hours; check before going and stay out of the residential floors.
