Lewis and Clark Community College sits on the former grounds of Monticello College, founded in 1835 as Monticello Seminary — the oldest women's seminary in the American West — which closed in 1971. The campus's Reid Memorial Library is said to be haunted by Harriet Newell Haskell, the school's headmistress from 1867 to 1907, whose ghost stories began circulating almost immediately after her 1907 death: flickering lights, fountains and elevators turning on and off, and the scent of lilac perfume reported in the library basement. On the day the school was officially renamed Lewis and Clark Community College, one of the oldest trees on campus fell without any storm or apparent cause — a coincidence some attribute to Haskell's displeasure at her college's name disappearing.
