Point Lookout Lighthouse, built in 1830 at the tip of Maryland's western shore, stands in a state park on the site of the Civil War's Camp Hoffman, where thousands of Confederate prisoners died. The Point Lookout Lighthouse Preservation Society, working with the Maryland Park Service, restored it and runs open houses and Halloween Spirits of Point Lookout tours. Psychic investigators recorded about two dozen voices speaking and singing in the building, and visitors have described a keeper's footsteps on the stairs, the figure of keeper Ann Davis in a blue skirt and white blouse, and a female voice saying my home. Campers and rangers also tell of Confederate soldiers walking the roads. The stories are lore, set against the camp's documented tragedy.
Lighthouse inside Point Lookout State Park; it is open on monthly open-house Saturdays (typically the first Saturday, April through November, 10 am to 2 pm) and during special tours, with a park entry fee. Spirits of Point Lookout tours run in the evening around Halloween; check the preservation society's site.
