Local ghost lore says soldiers from both the Revolution and the Civil War are seen wandering Yorktown Battlefield, and ghost-tour guidebooks describe Revolutionary soldiers on Crawford Road accompanied by drums and cadence calls, and long-dead townspeople still hiding from the siege in Cornwallis Cave. Yorktown Battlefield is part of Colonial National Historical Park and preserves the site of the 1781 siege that effectively ended the American Revolution, and its earthworks were used again in the Civil War.
