Bacon's Castle in Surry County is a brick house built in the mid-1600s and named for Bacon's Rebellion of 1676. It is a Preservation Virginia site and one of the oldest brick houses in the country. Its best-known legend is the Ghost Light, a fireball said to float from the old Lawne's Creek Church cemetery across the fields into the house; the site's staff suggest the folklore may trace to a comet seen in 1675. Orbs and a Civil War soldier have also been reported, and Preservation Virginia has run haunted-history night tours.
