Historic Sotterley on the Patuxent River dates to 1699 and is the oldest surviving plantation in Southern Maryland, with a mansion begun in 1703 and a long history of enslaved and tenant labor that the site now interprets. Sotterley offers a Ghosts of Sotterley tour in late October. Staff, tour guides and visitors tell of lights switching on, an inkwell that moved by itself, apparitions on tours, and a guide who said he was pushed down the stairs during a December candlelight tour. A recorded sound of drumming in the slave quarters and a voice saying get out were reported at one investigation. The stories are staff and visitor lore, set beside the site's documented history.
Historic site and working museum open seasonally for tours; the Ghosts of Sotterley tour runs in late October with advance tickets. Check Sotterley's site for hours, prices and dates.
