Gadsby's Tavern in Old Town Alexandria, begun in 1785, hosted George Washington and other founders and is now a city museum beside a working restaurant. Virginia Tourism links it to the legend of the Female Stranger, a mysterious woman who is said to have died at the tavern in 1816 and whose identity was never established, and the tavern is also said to be haunted by a young woman in period clothing. These accounts are local legend and are told on Alexandria ghost tours.
