The Willard, a hotel near the White House since the 1800s and in its present building since 1901, has hosted presidents, and its lore says Ulysses S. Grant smoked cigars in its lobby. A bar manager told the GW Hatchet in 2005 that Grant is its most famous rumored ghost, with staff reporting cigar smoke late at night, and tales also mention Jane Pierce, the First Lady who stayed here while mourning her son. The popular story that Grant coined the word "lobbyist" here is folklore. The ghost stories rest on staff anecdotes.
Working luxury hotel with bars and restaurants; the lobby is open to visitors.
