The Hay-Adams Hotel, opened in 1928 across Lafayette Square from the White House, stands on the site of the homes of John Hay and Henry Adams. Henry's wife Marian "Clover" Adams died in 1885 in the house that stood here, and her ghost is the hotel's best-known legend: guests and staff tell of a chandelier that sways, a scent of almonds in the halls, the sound of sobbing and slamming doors, especially near the December anniversary. The hotel does not promote the stories, and they remain ghost-tour folklore.
