Pere Cheney Cemetery is all that remains of a lumber village in Crawford County that faded away around 1900 after disease took many of its residents. Local legend says the village was cursed by a woman cast out of town, and it is one of the best-known ghost-town stories in northern Michigan. Visitors describe unexplained feelings, car trouble and apparitions near the few remaining stones. The cemetery was vandalized for years, so visitors should be respectful of a place that is also a burial ground for many children.
A rural cemetery open to visitors during daylight. The roads can be rough, so check conditions, and please do not disturb the stones.
