The Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee was built in 1903 by the lumber baron and politician Thomas Jefferson Ramsdell and is where James Earl Jones began his career as a stage carpenter and actor. Actors, stagehands and custodians describe doors that close behind them, lighting fixtures that fall and smash, and electrical equipment that fails for no reason. Two spirits are named in the stories, Ramsdell himself and an unknown woman, and the lights that come back on after being switched off at night are a frequent report. The theatre is a working performing-arts venue that still hosts a summer season.
A working theatre; tickets are needed for performances, and tours may be offered. Check its website for the season.
