Bowers Harbor Inn on the Old Mission Peninsula began as a summer home built in the 1880s by the Chicago lumberman Joseph W. Stickney and his wife. Local legend says the ghost of Genevieve, the wife, lingers there after she took her own life in the house, although records show her name was Jennie and the story is largely folklore. Staff and diners describe an elevator that runs by itself, a face appearing in mirrors, objects rearranged in the storeroom and lights that switch on and off. The mansion is now home to restaurants and has long been one of northern Michigan's best-known haunted dining spots.
