Local lore says an opera singer named Carlotta, who is said to have fallen to her death, haunts the Missouri Theatre; she is said to have kept a watchful eye on construction workers during restoration, and one worker who slipped from scaffolding and was caught by another set believed it was Carlotta who saved him. Others say the spirit may be a former owner, or more than one spirit. Staff and visitors describe footsteps, banging, unexplained noises and curtains that move on their own. The theatre opened in 1928 in downtown Columbia, designed by the Boller Brothers and modeled on the Paris Opera House, and it is now a concert and performing-arts venue that hosts regular shows and tours.
