The Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City opened in 1836 and held inmates for 168 years, becoming known as the bloodiest 47 acres in America before it closed in 2004. About 40 men and women were executed in its gas chamber. Visitors and former staff describe apparitions and sounds in the cell blocks, and Ghost Hunters investigated the prison in 2011, followed by Ghost Adventures in 2013. The site now runs history tours, ghost tours and overnight investigations, a use that sits on top of a harsh history for those who were held and who worked here. Ghost Files, the YouTube series with Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej, investigated the prison in "The Death Row Poltergeists of Missouri State Penitentiary" (2023).
Open for guided history and ghost tours from March through November, plus overnight investigations on select dates; tickets are required. Book through the penitentiary tour site.
