Built as a resort and later operated as an asylum, this building was sold in 1968 when a new hospital opened, then became St. Ignatius Manor, housing developmentally disabled adults until 2003. In the 1970s it became the home of Sara Joyce (1921-2011), a reclusive but now widely respected Idaho artist who shunned publicity during her lifetime; the building is now a private art gallery, Studio 84. Joyce and her family reported a range of activity over the years — full-bodied apparitions, ghosts that seemed to hold conversations, and poltergeist-style pranks.
The Joyce Building in Genesee is a private building. Its history as an asylum could not be confirmed and may be mixed up with a hospital in Washington. Please do not trespass.
