Florence began as a gold camp in 1861 and swelled to thousands of people within a year, with the state's first public school and library, then shrank to a few hundred by 1863 as the rich claims ran out. The Forest Service keeps the site open at no charge with interpretive panels, a footbridge and a historic cemetery, where many of the town's rougher residents were buried.
Long, rough forest road; check conditions with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
