Queen Lili'uokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, was imprisoned in an upstairs room of 'Iolani Palace for eight months in 1895 following the overthrow of the monarchy. Visitors and security guards report unexplainable shadows and lights on the grounds, along with the sound of footsteps. A recurring smell of flowers or bubble gum has also been reported — later traced to blossoms from a tree on the grounds, whose scent can carry more than a block away.
State monument and former royal residence, open Tuesday through Saturday with timed tickets bought online in advance. Guided tours run on Wednesdays and Thursdays; other days are self-guided with audio. Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned here in 1895, so please treat it with respect.
