Drivers near the entrance to Hanauma Bay have reported seeing balls of light — described as "fireballs" — shooting overhead on certain nights, traveling in the same direction as the road toward town. Local superstition holds that a driver who looks back toward Hanauma Bay and Koko Head after seeing them is inviting bad luck.
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday only, with the last entry in the early afternoon, and visits need an online reservation. A fee applies for most non-residents. The night lights are reported from the road above, not the bay.
