Fort Warren on Georges Island in Boston Harbor was built between 1833 and 1861 and held Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. Its famous ghost, the Lady in Black, is said to be the wife of a prisoner, Lieutenant Andrew Lanier, who was hanged in a black dress after trying to free him. That story was popularized by the local writer Edward Rowe Snow and is generally considered his legend rather than documented history. Visitors and park staff nonetheless tell of footsteps, moaning and the sounds of a gunshot in the fort's dark passages, which are among the most popular stops on the harbor's islands.
Reached by seasonal ferry from Boston to Georges Island, part of the Boston Harbor Islands national park area; a ferry fare applies. Check the ferry schedule before planning a visit.
