Dungeon Rock is a cave in Lynn Woods, a large city-owned park, tied to a legend that pirates once hid there and were trapped when an earthquake collapsed the cave in 1658. In 1851 a Spiritualist named Hiram Marble bought the land, saying spirits had told him buried pirate treasure lay inside, and he and his son Edwin spent years digging a tunnel into the rock without finding any. Visitors to the woods and the cave describe strange noises and visions, and the spirit-guided digging is the heart of the story. Hikers can reach the rock by trail, and the cave door has been opened to visitors for a few hours a day in the warmer seasons.
Lynn Woods is free and open daily for walking. The cave door at Dungeon Rock is open to visitors on a limited schedule in warm months; check with the Friends of Lynn Woods before going.
