Ghost tours tell of disembodied screams and train whistles near Church Hill Tunnel, and some say that in early October you can hear the train going through, or see a man trying to get into the tunnel to reach his train and save the trapped workers. A Richmond Vampire legend begins here too, ending at the W.W. Pool mausoleum in Hollywood Cemetery, and is usually traced to the engine's fireman, Benjamin Mosby, who was shoveling coal when the tunnel collapsed and the steam tank exploded. The railroad tunnel under Richmond's Church Hill partly collapsed on October 2, 1925 while workers were repairing it, trapping a locomotive and flatcars. The death toll is uncertain because many of the men were day laborers, but at least two laborers were never recovered and the tunnel was sealed with them inside. It remains a grave, and a 100th anniversary memorial was held in 2025.
The sealed tunnel is closed to the public and not safe to enter; its western portal can be seen from the street. Ghost-tour operators in Church Hill pass nearby.
