The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, completed in 1870 and the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, guards the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where hundreds of ships have been lost. Local legend ties the lighthouse and the nearby coast to Theodosia Burr Alston, the daughter of Aaron Burr, who vanished at sea in January 1813 aboard the schooner Patriot, and Outer Banks folklore holds that her ghost walks the beaches. The tower is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Open to the public with tower climbs in season and a museum in the keeper's quarters; check the National Park Service for hours.
