The Broadmoor opened in 1918 and has hosted a century of presidents and celebrities on its Colorado Springs grounds. A long-told story of guests hearing the ghosts of fire victims turned out to have nothing behind it — a former staff member confirmed in 2007 that the hotel has never had a fire. What staff do describe, late at night in the main hotel, is a woman in 1920s dress they take to be the Countess Portales, whose husband built the resort's original casino building before it was moved, used as a golf clubhouse, and torn down in the 1990s.
Historic resort hotel. Non-guests are generally welcome to walk the grounds and visit shops and restaurants, though the spa and pools are for guests only. Check ahead for special events.
