Gold Camp Road follows the grade of the old Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek District Railway, abandoned and converted to a one-lane road through a series of tunnels blasted in the 1890s. Drivers passing through the tunnels report handprints appearing on their windows and voices carried on the air inside, attributed locally to the railroad workers who built them.
The old railway grade became a road that is now closed to cars after a tunnel collapse in 1988; it is open to walkers and bikers. Most of the nine tunnels have collapsed or are unsafe, so stay out of any closed tunnel. Check with Colorado Springs Parks or the Forest Service for current closures.
