Staff at the Pioneers Museum describe unease near what was once a manager's apartment in the building. Local telling holds that he was shot by an employee in a pay dispute around 1959, though no record of the shooting has been found. The granite Italianate and Renaissance Revival building, with its domed clock tower still keeping a preserved 1900 E. Howard & Co. clock, was built in 1903 as the El Paso County Courthouse and served as the seat of county government until 1973. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Association acquired it after the county moved and reopened it in 1979 as the Pioneers Museum, now home to the region's history collections and Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute artifacts.
