The Wayside Inn in Middletown is a long-running Shenandoah Valley inn that claims to be one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the country. Guests and staff tell of a cold spot by the lobby fireplace where a woman in a high-collared blue gown has been seen, war veterans said to move between rooms and the sound of children running in empty halls; two rooms are said to be especially active. Innkeepers have described the spirits as friendly. These are lore, and ownership has changed over the years.
