Harpers Ferry, where John Brown raided the federal armory in 1859 and the town changed hands again and again during the Civil War, is a national historical park and the state's most-cited haunted destination. The state's Paranormal Trail features the Ghost Tour of Harpers Ferry, billed as the first ghost tour in America, and guides tell of phantom soldiers on Shenandoah Street and a ghost lady near St. Peter's Church.
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Lower Town are open to visitors; ghost tours run in the evenings, so check current operators.
