The Old South Mountain Inn at Turner's Gap on the National Pike dates to the 1730s and now operates as a restaurant owned by Chad Dorsey. Its ghost is said to be Madeline Dahlgren, the 1876 proprietress, who is seen near second-story windows. The Frederick News-Post has reported the story that she opened a door that is normally kept shut, letting an employee smell smoke from a fire in time to save the inn. A little girl has also been caught in photographs on the main floor. The stories are staff and patron lore, told at the inn as part of its history.
Working restaurant at Turner's Gap, open for dinner on most days; check the inn's site or call 301-432-6155 for hours and reservations. It sits near the South Mountain battlefield sites.
