Roche Harbor on San Juan Island grew around a lime works, and its Hotel de Haro, built in 1886, is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Washington. The resort's ghost is Ada, a McMillin family secretary or servant (accounts differ) whose ashes were placed in the McMillin family's columned mausoleum in the forest, a short walk from the hotel. A former manager described lights switching on and off, doors opening and a blender turning itself on, and tales also tell of a candle that relit itself.
Working resort and hotel; a walking trail leads about 20 minutes to the mausoleum, which is a burial place and should be treated with respect.
