Poland was founded in 1841 by a colony of German immigrant farmers, its town site laid out by John B. Neese, John Chance, Isaac Anderson, and James Crafton and named for blacksmith James Alexander Poland, who settled there on land Neese gave him. In the cemetery, one small grave belongs to a five-year-old boy locals say was taken over by demons; his family's color photo on the marker has stayed in perfect condition, and visitors say they can make out horns on his head in the image.
Cemetery beside the historic Poland Presbyterian church on State Road 42. Visit in daylight and treat the graves with respect.
