Built in 1876 by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, this Smith-truss covered bridge over Mill Creek in what's now Lieber State Recreation Area was once among the most photographed covered bridges in the country; it's the only covered bridge left in Owen County, bypassed by the road in 1988 and now open only to pedestrians, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The nearby community of Cunot, an Owen County hamlet whose own post office operated from 1894 to 1905, lends its name to local tellings of the bridge's legend: that a man from Poland, Indiana, who lost his farm in the Great Depression hanged himself here, and that on quiet nights he can still be seen walking the bridge with the noose around his neck.
