The Paulding Light is a glowing light that has been seen for decades along a power line from a gravel turnout on Robbins Pond Road in the Upper Peninsula. Local legend says it is a railroad brakeman's lantern, searching for his lost head after an accident, and it was the subject of Unsolved Mysteries and other programs. In 2010 students from Michigan Technological University tested it with telescopes and found the light matches the headlights of cars on US-45 refracted through the landscape. The viewing area is a signed public turnout, and it remains a popular night-time stop for visitors who come to judge for themselves.
A public roadside viewing area on Robbins Pond Road, free and open after dark. Park in the signed lot and stay off the private land and power-line road.
