Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury has welcomed travelers since 1716 and takes its name from the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Tales of a Wayside Inn. The inn's best-known spirit is Jerusha Howe, a member of the innkeeping family who died in 1842 at the age of 45 and who is said to have waited all her life for a love who never came back from England. Guests who stay in Room 9 say she responds to men in the room around three in the morning, but only if the room is quiet. The story is an enduring piece of the inn's lore, and the inn still operates with rooms and a dining room.
An operating inn with a restaurant and grounds; rooms can be booked, including Room 9. Check the inn's website for dining hours.
