The Kempton Hotel in Terry opened in June 1902 and is billed as the oldest continuously operated hotel in Montana, having hosted guests including Theodore Roosevelt and Calamity Jane. Southeast Montana tourism lists it among the region's haunted places. According to local accounts, two ranch children, aged six and seven, were brought to the doctor who lived at the hotel with typhoid and died soon after arriving, and since then people have reported children looking out of upper-floor windows when no children are there, along with footsteps and running in the halls. During the 1918 influenza epidemic the hotel took overflow patients, and guests have described a nurse in white who watches over the beds before fading away. The spirits are described as gentle.
Operating historic hotel with nine rooms and an attached antiques shop, just off I-94 in the Badlands. Book ahead, especially in summer.
