Kelso, California

Kelso grew around a Union Pacific depot where helper engines were added for the steep grade, and it faded after passenger service ended in 1964 and the depot closed in 1985. The 1920s Mission Revival depot is now the Mojave National Preserve visitor center, with exhibits in its old dormitory rooms and an adjoining ghost-town historic district.
Open daily as the preserve's visitor center; the Kelso Dunes are a few miles south.
