Guests and staff at the Oatman Hotel say Clark Gable's and Carole Lombard's laughter and whispers still come from the empty Room 15, and a photographer once produced a print of the vacant room with what looked like a man's figure in it; other spirits are said to haunt the old hotel too. Local tradition holds that the couple spent their wedding night in the room on March 29, 1939, though biographer Robert Matzen finds no evidence they did, writing that they were driven to Kingman to marry and returned straight to Hollywood. Gable did fall for the area and returned often to play poker with the miners. The hotel was built in 1902 as the Durlin Hotel, the oldest adobe building in Mohave County, and was the only structure in Oatman to survive the fire that swept the town in 1921. It stopped taking overnight guests years ago, but the restaurant, bar and the Gables' old room, now part of a small museum, remain open to visitors.
The Oatman no longer takes overnight guests, but its restaurant, bar, and small museum — including the Gables' old room — remain open to the public during business hours.
