Jekyll Island's own version of "Mary the Wanderer" is a distinct legend from the similarly-named ghost story told on nearby St. Simons Island. This Mary is said to haunt Jekyll's East Beach and the stretch of Beachview Drive where the island's first hotel, built in 1958 and originally named The Wanderer, once stood. As the story goes, she still walks the shore with a lantern, watching for a betrothed who was lost at sea and never came home.
State-managed barrier island that is open to visitors; a daily parking pass is needed to drive on. The Jekyll Island Club Resort is an operating hotel and restaurant. The island's visitor center can suggest walking and biking routes.
