Construction on Fort Clinch began in 1847, named for General Duncan Lamont Clinch of Seminole War fame, and was only about two-thirds finished with no cannons mounted when the Civil War broke out. Confederate troops occupied it by default in 1861 before General Robert E. Lee ordered it abandoned in March 1862 to free up troops elsewhere; Union forces then occupied and continued building the fort through the end of the war. Now a state park with daily tours and living-history reenactments, staff and volunteers have long reported seeing Union soldiers in the courtyard, including one said to be searching for the wife he promised in a letter he'd return home to.
Florida state park with an entrance fee per vehicle and a separate fee to enter the fort. The fort is open daily; check floridastateparks.org for current hours and for the park's candlelight tours.
