The Harvey Public Library was built on the site of the home of Sophia Eberlein, who in 1931 was murdered by her second husband in her bedroom, according to historical accounts, and the librarian's office is said to stand where the bedroom was. Since the library opened around 1990, staff have reported books that fall from shelves and return, keys that go missing, flickering lights and, on one occasion, a computer displaying a large letter S. The librarian asks visitors not to discuss Sophie in October, the month of her death.
Public library open regular hours; please be respectful of staff and of a real victim's memory.
