Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park near Mandan, on the Missouri River, preserves the site of the Army post from which Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh Cavalry rode to the Little Bighorn in 1876, as well as a Mandan earth-lodge village. The reconstructed Custer House is described by the North Dakota tourism office as the most haunted spot in the park, with tour guides reporting a presence that moves dishes and candlesticks, a woman in black looking from a second-floor window, cold spots, voices and doors that open on their own. Said to be Libbie Custer's spirit waiting for the men to return, and a soldier in a blue 1880s uniform who appears and vanishes.
State park open year-round with costumed guided tours of the Custer House from about 10 to 4 in season; the park also runs a fall Haunted Fort event.
