Built in 1879 by Archibald M. Kennedy & Sons over Tanners Creek's East Fork, the Guilford Covered Bridge was slated for removal when the state built a new highway bridge in 1960, but a citizens' committee saved it and relocated it to what's now Guilford Covered Bridge Park. An arson fire damaged it in 1993, and it was fully restored by 1997. Local legend holds that a woman was struck by a train and knocked into the creek, her body carried downstream to the bridge, and that her screams and a passing train can sometimes be heard from the bridge over the creek.
