Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to protect settlers and Pony Express riders, served as a Civil War supply depot, and was closed and auctioned in 1869. The adobe ruins are kept in "arrested decay" within a state historic park, with a new visitor center and the nearby restored Buckland Station.
State park with a campground and trails; the visitor center hours are reduced in winter.
