The Fire Island Lighthouse, completed in 1858, is a landmark on the barrier island south of Long Island, guarding the approach to New York Harbor. Haunted-places lists say a caretaker hanged himself at an earlier lighthouse, and staff and visitors report doors that shut on their own, footsteps and other unexplained activity around the tower. The lighthouse is part of Fire Island National Seashore.
Open to the public with tower climbs and a small museum on a seasonal schedule, reached by a boardwalk from the parking area; check the Preservation Society for hours.
